Dialing Rules for Phone Calls

Body

Summary

This article will describe the dialing rules when making a call. Clinton Community College has adopted a simplified dialing plan that should feel more familiar with end-users.

Procedure

Dialing an Extension

  • To dial someone's extension, enter the three digit extension into either the Teams client or on the desk phone.
  • This will dial the full direct inward dialing (DID) number for the user and place the call.
    • Example: If you dial "106", you will notice the phone system will dial "+1-518-562-4106"

Dialing a Local (Area Code 518) Number

  • To dial a local (area code 518) number, enter the 7 digits into either the Teams client or on the desk phone.
  • You will notice that the phone system will automatically add "+1-518" to the telephone number and will place the call.
    • Example: If you dial "562-4200", you will notice the phone system will dial "+1-518-562-4200"

Dialing a Long Distance Number

  • To dial a long distance number, enter the area code and proceeding 7 digits into either the Teams client or on the desk phone.
  • You will notice that the phone will recognize the new area code and add "+1" country code to the number and will place the call.
    • Example: If you dial "123-562-4200", you will notice the phone system will dial "+1-123-562-4200"

Dialing an International Number

  • To dial an international number, enter the entire phone number into the phone.
    • In the Teams desktop client, you can also type out the country code, like "+123" to ensure that you are dialing the correct number.
  • The phone system will recognize that the number is not a US-based long-distance number and will default to attempting an international call.
    • Example: If you dial "123-123-562-4200", you will notice the phone system will dial "+123-123-562-4200"

Emergency Calls

  • To make an emergency call, dial 911 on any phone.
  • Certain individuals on campus will be notified of the 911 call and will respond accordingly.
  • Clinton Community College complies with Kari's Law and the RAY BAUM's Act (https://www.fcc.gov/mlts-911-requirements) in the following ways:
    • Allowing 911 to be directly dialed from any phone with no preceding number needing to be dialed.
    • Sending stationary device location information, such as the building and floor, to local and national Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) when 911 has been dialed.
    • Sending mobile device location, such as the building and floor, to local and national Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) when 911 has been dialed from within the Teams client application.
